You joke but they sorta did in a roundabout way. In Brazil, Willy’s-Overland built a licensed version of the Alpine A108 called the Interlagos.

well, the “ cheap paint job” has already been tried. The clear is peeling off and you can see the original color (Aetna blue ?) under chip paint and in hard-to-paint areas (grills, ...). This one needs a serious paint overhaul.

Brazil’s auto industry is very interesting. For decades the country had incredibly nationalistic policies. Cars could only be sold there if they were built in the country, n o imports allowed. This led to brands like Chevy and VW being completely separate entities from their global brands, with entirely unique lineups.
In the case of the Interlagos, Renault wanted to sell the Dauphine in Brazil but couldn’t invest in manufacturing facilities and the supply chains they needed. Willy’s had an established presence in the country and agreed to build and sell the car for Renault. Being as the Alpine was based on the Dauphine, it made sense to build that too as a sporty offering.
